About this piece

Red spongeware, with its bold, hand-applied sponge decoration over a cream or buff ground, was produced across rural America through the 19th and early 20th centuries. Each piece was decorated by hand, which means no two are exactly alike. The red decoration on this bowl is particularly vivid, giving it an expressive, folk art quality that makes it a pleasure to have on a shelf or table.

Condition

Good antique condition. Shows natural age-related patina consistent with use. Sponge decoration clear and vibrant.

Care & display

Hand wash only with mild soap and warm water. Not suitable for dishwasher or microwave. Handle with care, old ceramics are more fragile than modern pieces. Display on open shelving or a kitchen counter where the character of the piece can be appreciated.
