A pair of barn owl salt and pepper shakers — the heart-shaped face, the silent flight, the white shape that ghosts across a hay field at dusk, one for each. They sit side by side on the table and look like they're keeping each other company.

Why it's here: Quail Ceramics has been part of our co-owner Tom's life from the very beginning — they're designed in Stoke-on-Trent, the English pottery town where he grew up. Every piece is hand-painted, and none of them are made just to look at: they're all built around a job — a salt shaker, a jug, a pencil pot, a vase, an egg cup. Quail is our favorite easy way to bring a little rural whimsy into a room. A pair of barn owl shakers on the dinner table — that small pop of personality on an otherwise ordinary surface is exactly the point.

Care: Hand-painted stoneware. Dishwasher safe; we'd still recommend the top rack and a gentle cycle for the long-term life of the painted detail. Not suitable for microwave or oven use.
