Why it’s here

Everything in the Homestedt Antiques collection was sourced from rural barns, markets, and dealers across the North East of the United States, England, and Sweden, the same regions that have inspired much of what Homestedt does. These are objects that have already lived a life. They were made by hand, used daily, and have arrived here still doing what they were always meant to do. We collect these pieces because they show the kind of character that comes from decades of use, the evidence of the maker’s hand, and a beauty that adds texture, history and warmth to a home.

What you’re seeing in this collection is just a small selection of our antiques. For the full range of our latest pieces, we recommend a visit to our North Branch, NY location where you’ll find an ever changing collection of pieces that have caught our eye.

About this piece

The brown salt glaze on this crock has the richness and complexity that only comes from age. Salt glazing, one of the oldest ceramic techniques in the tradition, produces a surface that moves between tones in ways that no other process can replicate, and the warm brown slip on this example has deepened beautifully over the decades. A two gallon crock of this quality and character is a genuine find. It would have sat at the heart of a rural kitchen, used for pickling, fermenting, and storing the produce of the season.

Condition

Some repaired cracks, noted and priced accordingly. Not water tight and not suitable for use as a liquid vessel. The repairs are part of the piece’s history and do not detract from its beauty as a display object. Colour and patina excellent throughout.

Care & display

Suitable for display only given the repaired cracks. Works beautifully holding dried flowers, branches, utensils, or as a standalone object on a hearth, shelf, or kitchen counter. Wipe clean with a dry cloth.
